Why doesn’t my business show up on Google Maps?

It is almost always one of four fixable things, and most of the fixes are free. Written for business owners in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, but true anywhere.

The short answer: your Google Business Profile is probably unverified, incomplete, suspended, or just new. Google will not show a profile it has not verified, the postcard with your PIN takes 5 to 14 days, and a brand new listing can take 2 to 8 weeks to settle in. After that, Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence, and a complete profile with photos and reviews carries most of it.

The four usual causes

Unverified. Until you claim the profile and enter the PIN, Google cannot confirm your business exists at that address, so it will not put you on the map. This is the most common cause and the easiest fix.

Incomplete. Google deprioritizes half empty profiles. Missing category, missing hours, no photos, no description: each blank field is a reason to show someone else.

Suspended. Profiles get suspended without warning, often for stuffing extra keywords into the business name field. If your profile vanished overnight, this is the first thing to check.

Too new. A fresh listing has no history, so Google waits to see real signals: people searching your name, asking for directions, calling, leaving reviews. That usually resolves over 2 to 8 weeks on its own.

How Google decides who shows on the map

Three factors: relevance, how well your profile matches what was typed. Distance, how close you are to the person searching, which you cannot change. And prominence, how established and trusted you look, which you absolutely can change. Across studies of local rankings, profile signals are weighted at roughly a third of the whole result, which is more than the website and reviews each carry on their own.

Photos are the quickest prominence win: businesses with photos get about 42 percent more direction requests and 35 percent more website clicks than businesses without them.

The fix, in order

  1. Claim and verify the profile. Search your business name, click “Own this business?”, and choose verification. The postcard takes 5 to 14 days, so start today.
  2. Use your real business name, nothing added. “Mario’s Barber Shop” ranks. “Mario’s Barber Shop Best Fades Surrey” risks suspension.
  3. Pick the most specific category. “Barber shop” beats “hair care”. The primary category is one of the strongest single signals.
  4. Fill every field. Hours, service area, description, phone. Blank fields are rankings you are giving away.
  5. Add twenty real photos. The room, the work, the team. Phone photos beat no photos.
  6. Link your website, and make the details match. Same name, address and phone on both, spelled the same way.
  7. Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to them. Review count and recency are prominence, and replies show the profile is alive.

Where the website fits in

You can be on the map without a website, and if that is your budget this month, do the profile first. But the two confirm each other: a profile that links to a real website with matching details ranks more easily, and almost half of all Google searches have local intent, so the click after the map is usually someone checking your prices and photos before they commit. That page is the job your website does.

Common questions about Google Maps visibility

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

Usually unverified, incomplete, suspended, or too new. Verify first, complete everything second, then give a new profile a few weeks of real activity.

How long does verification take?

The postcard typically takes 5 to 14 days. Video verification, where Google offers it, is often 3 to 5 days.

How does Google rank map results?

Relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance with categories and a complete profile, and prominence with photos, reviews and a linked website.

Do photos really matter?

Businesses with photos get about 42 percent more direction requests and 35 percent more website clicks. It is one of the few ranking factors you can finish in an afternoon.

Do I need a website to appear on the map?

No. But the profile ranks better linked to a site with matching details, and the site is where people check prices and photos before choosing you.
