Why do web design agency quotes come back so high?
Agencies in Vancouver and Toronto bill $120 to $250 an hour for design and development. A simple brochure website takes 40 to 60 hours once you count the kickoff meeting, the revisions, the testing and the handover. That is how a straightforward site reaches $6,500 before anyone has picked up a camera.
It is not that agencies are overcharging. It is that their cost structure includes account managers, project managers and offices, and a five page website for a local business has to carry a share of all of it. Roughly 60 percent of small business websites in Canada are built in the $3,000 to $10,000 range, and most Canadian small businesses invest $2,000 to $6,000.
What does a website builder really cost over three years?
Website builders look like the cheap option. $15 to $50 a month is easy to say yes to. Over three years that is $540 to $1,800, and at the end of it you do not own the website. Stop paying and it comes down.
That is the part worth thinking about before you compare prices. A one time cost and a monthly cost are not the same kind of number, and a builder that looks cheaper this month can cost more than an agency by year four.
What changes the price of a website?
- How many pages you need. Most local businesses need four to seven, not twenty.
- Whether someone photographs your business. Stock photos are free and look like stock photos. A real shoot is the single biggest difference in how a local business looks online.
- Whether you need to sell online. A store needs payment, inventory and tax software, and that software charges every month.
- Whether you need bookings that take deposits. Live availability needs a database. A booking button that links to a free tool does not.

What should you ask a web designer in Vancouver before you hire them?
Ask these whether you are talking to us, a freelancer, or a web development company with a downtown office. The answers tell you more than the quote does.
- Who owns the domain name? It should be registered in your name, not the designer’s.
- Who owns the photos? If the photographer keeps the licence, you may not be allowed to use your own photos on Instagram.
- Is there a monthly fee, and what happens if I stop paying it? Ask exactly what comes down.
- Can I see the website before I pay? If the answer is no, ask why.
- How long until it is live? Get a date, not a range.
